Welcome.

I am David Froseth, a jazz musician (piano, organ, saxophone, guitar, drums), composer, arranger, artist, writer, public speaker, and teacher who lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.

This website is about,

— my method of learning and teaching music, which I call Patterns of Music™;
— the book I am currently writing, also called Patterns of Music™; and,
The David Froseth Music & Art Studio, where I teach private music lessons and jazz combo classes.

No matter how well you play an instrument, you can start learning to compose and improvise. When you learn to think like a performer AND a composer, you can then create your own unique music, you can improvise a music performance in the moment, you can express your own unique sense of life through music. You can make YOUR musical voice heard, even if it is just to yourself.

Music is so rich in meaning. I think being a musician is much more than sight reading, memorizing, and performing note-for-note some one else’s composed music. These are valuable and enjoyable skills. But, behind the letter-based dots on the page there are numbers. There is a language of patterns—a network of interconnections between these patterns. The mind of the composer lies hidden behind those dots.

In private lessons and combo classes I can help you learn to

— structure your own music learning with YOUR meaningful questions.
— play piano, organ, saxophone, guitar, bass, hand drums, or drum set.
— co-create music with other people.
— compose a solo piano piece, or a guitar/vocal song, or a chart for jazz combo.
— transcribe music off of the recordings that inspire you.
— record and produce music on the computer.
— put music number theory to practical use in the music you are playing.
— figure out the chord changes in a favorite Classical piece.
— play in different musical styles like the Blues, Funk, Afro-Cuban, or Bebop.
— make your own unique arrangement of a jazz standard or a Beatles tune.
— walk a bass line while soloing on the Hammond B3 organ (I actually have a Hammond A100).

The possibilities for projects are endless.
